Sony · 1995
Sony's PlayStation reached North America on September 9, 1995, and by the time Sony stopped making it in March 2006 it had sold more than 102 million units worldwide. It played games from black CDs, and every genuine disc carries a wobble signal that the drive checks for both copy protection and region. The first US games came in long cardboard boxes before Sony moved to jewel cases. The hardware changed a lot along the way. The launch SCPH-1001 had its own RCA jacks, later models dropped them and then the parallel port, and the 2000 PS one shrank the whole thing and moved the power supply out to an adapter. Early lasers wore out quickly, so the model number on the label tells you a lot about what you're buying.
