PlayStation · Console · 1995–1997
The SCPH-1001 is the PlayStation that launched in North America in September 1995, and it's the US model with the most going on around the back. Beside the AV Multi Out it has its own RCA jacks for composite video and stereo audio, plus a parallel I/O port and a serial port. Early units had real problems. The laser sat on a thermoplastic sled (the KSM-440AAM) close to the power supply, the heat wore the sled unevenly, and in bad cases a console would only read discs turned on its side or upside down. Units built from late December 1995 got the PU-8 board, which fixed some of the early faults, and Sony later moved to a die-cast sled. So ask for a short video of a game loading before you buy.

Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
The laser is the weak spot. The first sled was plastic and sat near the power supply, so worn units skip during video scenes, fail to read discs, or only work tipped on their side.
New to retro hardware? How to check a used retro console covers testing, yellowed plastic and opened shells, and regions and video out explains what will run on what, and on which TV.
Buying guide
We'd buy the SCPH-1001 titled tested and working at $76 delivered, which the photo shows with a controller, AV cable, power cord and memory card, just under the $80 to $160 band most complete consoles ask. There are at least 63 for sale. Console-only units start around $62 delivered, and kits with a controller or two and cables mostly ask $85 to $110. Look for SCPH-1001 on the label and the yellow, white and red RCA jacks on the back, and ask for a video of a game loading and playing a cutscene with the console sitting flat, since the original laser sled wears and starts to skip. The boxed bundles at $222 and $316 delivered only make sense if you want the box.
$61.84est. delivered
The lowest ask on an SCPH-1001 not sold as-is, $62 delivered, but the photo shows the console alone and the title doesn't say tested. You'll need a controller, the AC cord and RCA or AV leads, so ask for a video of a game booting first.
