Final Fantasy VII came to North America in September 1997 on three discs, with Sony as the publisher. It sold 330,000 copies in its first weekend there, and Sony said it had passed a million in North America by early December. That's why there are so many around. The first US printing is what collectors call black label, to set it apart from the Greatest Hits reprint, which carries a green Greatest Hits label on the left of the cover art. Both use the same disc serials, SCUS-94163 to 94165, so the cover is what tells them apart. A complete copy here means the case, all three discs and the manual. The original version has now sold over 15.3 million copies worldwide.
Original black-label releaseGreatest Hits reprint (green label on the cover)
The original US release is the one collectors call black label. The Greatest Hits reprint has a green Greatest Hits label on the left side of the cover art. Both use the same three serials, SCUS-94163, 94164 and 94165, so the discs' serials won't tell them apart. The front cover will.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the NTSC-U release for North American consoles. Japanese and European copies won't boot on a US PlayStation unless it has a modchip.
Saves
It saves to a PlayStation memory card and needs one block. Nothing is saved on the disc, so you need a working card.
Fakes and mods
Genuine PlayStation discs are black on the data side. A burned copy shows a CD-R's green, blue, silver or gold dye, and it won't boot on an unmodified console because it can't carry the wobble signal pressed into real discs.

The manual
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
You need all three discs to finish it, so a copy missing one won't get you to the end. Check every disc for deep scratches, since the game reads from all three.
01Cover label: Check the front cover in the photos. Black label has no green Greatest Hits label on the left.
02All discs: Count the discs in the photos. You need discs 1, 2 and 3.
03Serials: Read the serial on each disc label in the photos. They should be SCUS-94163, 94164 and 94165.
04Disc underside: Ask for a photo of each disc's data side. It should be black, with no deep scratches.
05Manual: Check the photos for the manual if you're paying for complete in box. It should be the US manual for this game.
06Case: Look at the case in the photos. It should hold the original cover and back insert, with no cracks.
07Boot test: On arrival, start each disc on your console. Each should load past the PlayStation logo.
We'd buy the black label copy titled complete in box and tested at $80 delivered, close to the $74 median, or the Greatest Hits copy with its case, manual and all three discs at $50 if you only want to play it. There are at least 147 for sale and most ask $45 to $120 delivered, a band that mostly reflects cased copies. Black label without a manual asks about $48 to $52, Greatest Hits complete about $49 to $55, and black label complete $80 to $155. Both printings share the serials SCUS-94163 to 94165, so go by the front cover, where a green Greatest Hits strip down the left means the reprint whatever the title says. Count all three discs and ask for a photo of each data side, which should be black. Skip the cheapest copy titled black label, whose photo shows a Greatest Hits cover, and the $800 directory text misprint.
