Nintendo · 1996
Nintendo launched the N64 in North America on September 29, 1996, with Super Mario 64 beside it on the shelf. It stayed with cartridges after Sony moved to discs, so games load almost instantly and the carts are tough. Its controller was the first to make a thumbstick standard, and four controller ports made it a multiplayer machine, the home of GoldenEye 007's four-player deathmatch. North America bought 20.63 million of the 32.93 million sold, more than Japan and Europe combined, and Nintendo discontinued it in 2002. That means plenty of consoles and controllers to choose from. The things to check are a worn controller stick, a missing Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak, and the video, since a stock US console only puts out composite and S-video.
