Konami released Symphony of the Night in North America in October 1997 with little advertising and limited funding for the US production, and it wasn't a big seller at first. Critics praised its huge, open castle full of secrets, and its music. Word of mouth did the rest, and the PlayStation version went on to sell 477,304 copies in the US. A Greatest Hits reprint followed in 1998. Both US printings came in jewel cases. Sony's long cardboard boxes belong to the first wave of US PlayStation games, so there's no US long-box Symphony. If you just want to play it, it's been rereleased on Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, the PSP's Dracula X Chronicles and the PS4's Castlevania Requiem.

The version, the region and what it needs
Which one is it
US copies came in a standard jewel case, both the 1997 original and the 1998 Greatest Hits reprint. There's no US long box. Sony's long cardboard boxes were only for the first US PlayStation games. The Greatest Hits copy has the green Greatest Hits label on its cover and its own disc art. The US serial is SLUS-00067.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the NTSC-U release for North American consoles. The Japanese version, which came with an art book and a soundtrack CD, won't boot on a US PlayStation unless it has a modchip.
Saves
It saves to a PlayStation memory card and uses one block.
Fakes and mods
Genuine PlayStation discs are black on the data side. A burned copy shows a CD-R's green, blue, silver or gold dye, and it won't boot on an unmodified console because it can't carry the wobble signal pressed into real discs.
Should come with it
The disc
The jewel case with its original cover and back insert
The manual
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
It's one disc, so scratches on the data side are the main risk. A copy sold as a long box is mislabeled, since every US copy came in a jewel case.
01Cover label: Check the front cover in the photos. The original has no green Greatest Hits label on the left.
02Serial: Read the serial on the disc label in the photos. It should be SLUS-00067.
03Disc art: Compare the disc label with the cover in the photos. Original and Greatest Hits discs have their own art, so they should match.
04Disc underside: Ask for a photo of the disc's data side. It should be black, with no deep scratches.
05Manual: Check the photos for the manual if you're paying for complete in box. It should be the US manual for this game.
06Case: Look at the case in the photos. It should be a jewel case holding the original cover and back insert.
07Boot test: On arrival, play through the opening prologue. It should load into the castle without freezing.
We'd buy the Greatest Hits copy titled complete and tested at $166 delivered, right at the median, unless you want the 1997 original, which starts at $228 delivered for a copy titled Original and $326 for one titled black label. There are at least 68 for sale. US discs without a manual or with no case ask about $100 to $160 delivered and Greatest Hits complete copies about $155 to $191, so the $130 to $220 band mostly reflects the reprint. Every US copy came in a jewel case with serial SLUS-00067, so check the cover for the green Greatest Hits strip, compare the disc art with the cover, and ask for a photo of the disc's data side, which should be black. Skip the black label copy at $797 delivered, about five times the median.
