Lance Barr's SNES controller set the shape most gamepads still follow, with four face buttons in a diamond and two shoulder buttons on top. It became the basis for the PlayStation, Xbox and Wii Classic Controller layouts. The American version got its own colors to match the console, lavender X and Y buttons with dished faces and purple A and B buttons that bulge out, so your thumb can tell them apart without looking. Japan and Europe kept the four bright colors from the Super Famicom logo. When the small SNS-101 console came out in 1997, its pad swapped the console logo for an embossed Nintendo logo. On eBay, these share search results with Classic Edition and Switch Online pads, which don't plug into a real SNES.
Before you plug it in
Shoulder buttons that stop responding are a common complaint. A pad where every button seems to pause the game points to a fault in the controller, not the console.

Buying guide
We'd buy the SNS-005 titled tested at $25 with free shipping, under the $27 median of the $20 to $50 band. There are at least 21 listed, OEM pads from 99 to 100% sellers ask $19 to $27 delivered, and a boxed pad with its manual asks $57. In the photos, look for the Nintendo name and the US buttons, lavender dished X and Y with purple domed A and B, since a pad with four colored buttons is a Japanese or PAL one, and Classic Edition and Switch Online pads won't plug into a real SNES. Ask for a video pressing every button, the L and R shoulders especially, since those are the ones that usually stop responding. Skip the $358 sealed 1997 pad unless you collect boxes.
$18.69delivered
The lowest delivered pad at $19 with free shipping, and the photo shows the Super Nintendo logo and US button colors, but it's heavily yellowed and not titled tested. Ask for a video pressing every button.
