Original Nintendo Brand NES Controller OEM Completely Cleaned & Tested NES-004
NES Controller (NES-004)
Every NES set came with at least two of these, with a cross-shaped D-pad on the left, Select and Start in the middle, and B and A on the right. Nintendo's 1990 service workbook shows how plain it is inside. There's a single 4021 shift register, and each button pushes a rubber pad onto contacts on the board, which the console reads one button at a time. So the usual problems are wear, with rubber pads worn down and contacts dirty. The NES-004 plugs into either port on both NES models, and its long cord was about three times the length of a Famicom pad's.

The version, the region and what it needs
- Which one is it
- The NES-004 is the flat, rectangular pad that came two to a Control Deck, and it works in either port. Its cable is about three times longer than a Famicom pad's. The rounded NES-039 dogbone came with the 1993 top-loader.
- RegionNTSC-U (North America)
- This is the North American NES-004. It uses the NES's 7-pin plug, which the original Famicom doesn't have, since Famicom pads are wired into the console.
- Fakes and mods
- Nintendo wasn't the only company making NES controllers, so check the photos for Nintendo printed on the face and ask for a shot of the back label.
What to check
Nintendo's own service workbook blames slow or random response on worn rubber contact pads and dirty contacts on the board. A damaged cable is the other common failure.
- 01Nintendo name: Look for Nintendo printed on the face in the photos. That marks a genuine NES-004.
- 02Back label: Ask for a photo of the back label. It should name Nintendo.
- 03Buttons: Ask the seller to confirm every button works in a game. Each press should register right away with no sticking.
- 04D-pad: Ask whether all four directions and the diagonals register. Missed or mushy presses point to worn contact pads.
- 05Cable: Look along the cord in the photos, especially where it enters the pad. No cuts, kinks or bare wire is what you want.
- 06Plug: Check the plug in the photos. An uncracked housing and clean contacts are good signs.
- 07Yellowing: Check the gray plastic in the photos for a yellow cast. Even color is what you want.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026We'd buy the NES-004 titled completely cleaned and tested at $14.44 with free shipping, just under the $15 to $20 band most of these ask. Plenty are titled tested from 99 to 100% sellers, so there's no reason to take one with no test claim or one sold as is for about the same money. Check the photos for Nintendo printed on the face, since other companies made NES pads too, and ask for a shot of the back label. Slow or random response comes from worn rubber pads and dirty contacts, so ask whether every button and direction was tested. Skip the $33 cleaned-and-tested listing, which is well over the band and shares its title with another account.
