Sega released the six-button pad in 1993, a slightly smaller controller with three extra face buttons laid out like the buttons on arcade fighting games such as Street Fighter II. Sega called it the 6-Button Arcade Pad and followed it with the Remote Arcade Pad, an infrared version that Sega Visions said works from up to 15 feet away with one receiver for two pads. It works on every Genesis. Some older games read the controller in ways that trip it up, so Sega gave it a Mode button, and holding Mode as you switch the console on drops it into three-button mode. ASCII and others sold six-button pads at the same time, so check whose name is on the one you're buying.
Before you plug it in
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
A pad this old has seen heavy use, so test every button and the D-pad. Look hard at the cord where it enters the shell and at the plug.
New to retro hardware? How to check a used retro console covers testing, yellowed plastic and opened shells, and regions and video out explains what will run on what, and on which TV.
Buying guide
We'd buy the MK-1653 titled tested and cleaned at $31 delivered, right at the $30 median, because the photo shows Sega's name and all six face buttons. There are at least 93 listed, most Sega pads ask $25 to $40 delivered, and boxed ones ask about $48 to $56. Check every photo for Sega's name, the X, Y and Z buttons and the Mode button on the top right edge, since two listings here titled six-button show a three-button pad. Ask for a video pressing every button and the D-pad, and look closely at the cord where it enters the shell, the spot that wears out first. Skip the arcade stick at $143 delivered, titled as a six-button controller.
