The Sega CD launched in North America on October 15, 1992, an add-on that plugs into the side of the Genesis and brings its own 12.5 MHz 68000, more memory and a CD drive. Discs held far more than cartridges, which made full-motion video games like Night Trap possible, and Sonic CD became its best seller at 1.5 million copies. The original Model 1 sits under the Genesis with a motorized front tray. The cheaper Model 2 followed in 1993 with a top-loading lid, built to sit beside the smaller Genesis. Sega sold 2.24 million worldwide before dropping it in 1996. Either model fits either Genesis with the right plates and cables, so check those parts come with it.

The version, the region and what it needs
Which one is it
The Model 1 sits under the Genesis and loads discs on a motorized front tray. The Model 2 sits beside it with a top-loading lid and no motorized tray. Both models work with both Genesis models. The Model 2 came with an extension spacer and a sound mixing cable for the original Genesis, and the Model 2 Genesis manual says to use the steel joining plate from the original Sega CD. The Genesis CDX is a separate all-in-one unit, and the Genesis 3 can't use a Sega CD at all.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the North American unit, and Sega's manual says it's for use in North America (NTSC) only. Sega CD games are region-locked, so Japanese and European discs won't boot on it without a third-party workaround.
Video out
It has no video output of its own, so the picture comes from the Genesis. The Model 2 has left and right RCA line-out jacks and a mixing jack. With a Model 1 Genesis, the sound mixing cable runs from the Genesis headphone jack to the Sega CD's mixing jack so cartridge and CD sound play together.
Power
It needs its own AC adapter plugged in alongside the Genesis adapter, and the Model 2 manual lists it as DC 9V. Sega's manual says never to swap the Genesis and Sega CD adapters. RetroRGB's power supply list puts the Sega CD in the same plug and polarity group as the Model 1 Genesis, which makes a mix-up easy, so label them.
Saves
Games save to 64 Kbit of internal backup memory. Sega's Model 2 manual says it holds saves for about a month without power, after which you may need to reformat it and leave the unit on for six hours before it holds again. Sega also sold a 1 Mbit Backup RAM Cartridge near the end of the system's life.
Should come with it
The Sega CD AC adapter
The steel joining plate and screws
For a Model 2 on a Model 1 Genesis, the extension spacer and sound mixing cable
A pack-in disc (the Model 2 was bundled with Sewer Shark)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Drives that won't spin or read discs, units that freeze at the BIOS screen and damaged connector boards between the Sega CD and the Genesis are common Sega CD questions on iFixit. Sega's manual says to open the disc door only with the Open button, since working it by hand can make it malfunction.
01Which model: Check the photos for a front tray (Model 1) or a top lid (Model 2). Pick the one that suits your Genesis and shelf.
02Plates: Look in the photos for the steel joining plate and screws. Without them it won't attach securely.
03Adapter: Look for the Sega CD's own AC adapter in the photos. It needs one in addition to the Genesis adapter.
04Disc test: Ask for a video of a Sega CD game booting past the BIOS screen. The game's title screen should load.
05Tray: On a Model 1, ask for a video of the tray opening and closing. It should move smoothly on the button alone.
06Connector: Zoom in on the connector that plugs into the Genesis. It should be straight and undamaged.
07Mixing cable: For a Model 1 Genesis, check the listing for the sound mixing cable. Without it you lose the combined stereo sound.
08Saves: On arrival, save in a game and check it the next day. The save should still be there.
We'd buy the Model 2 titled tested and working with its power supply at $250 delivered, just under the $257 median of the $210 to $340 band. There are at least 41 listed, nearly all Model 2s, and bare tested drives ask from $191 delivered, but the Sega CD needs its own adapter (DC 9V on the Model 2) plugged in alongside the Genesis one, so pick one with it or budget for it. Docking a Model 2 to a Model 1 Genesis also takes the extension spacer and the sound mixing cable, and none of these titles mention them. Drives that won't read discs and freezes at the BIOS screen are the usual faults, so ask for a video of a game disc booting. Skip the boxed Model 1 at $2,500, about ten times the median.

The lowest delivered Sega CD titled tested and working, a Model 2 at $191, but it's the drive alone. Add the Sega CD's own adapter, plus the spacer and mixing cable if your Genesis is a Model 1.
A Model 2 titled tested and working with its power supply at $250 delivered, just under the median, and the photo shows the adapter. That's the part a bare drive is missing, for about $60 more than the cheapest.
