Sega's 1993 redesign made the Genesis smaller and lighter, with a simpler, cheaper board that needs less power. The headphone jack and volume slider went, and the Model 1's RF and DIN ports became one small A/V OUT jack that carries composite, RGB and stereo sound. That makes a Model 2 easier to run in stereo than a Model 1, which gives stereo only from its headphone jack. It plays the same cartridges, takes the Sega CD and 32X, and Sega designed the Sega CD 2 for it. Majesco also sold 150,000 of them in 1998. RetroRGB rates the early Model 1 above it for sound and recommends a bypass board for every Model 2, so audio fans go older and everyone else can save the shelf space.

Which one is it
The Model 2 is the smaller, lighter Genesis from 1993, sold in North America as just "Genesis" without the Sega prefix. It has a power button and reset button but no headphone jack or volume slider. One A/V OUT jack on the back replaces the Model 1's RF and DIN ports. Console5's tech wiki lists its board revisions as VA0 through VA4. Majesco's 1998 Genesis 3 is smaller again and can't use a Sega CD, so check the photos when a listing just says Genesis.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the North American NTSC console. Japanese Mega Drive cartridges are shaped differently and won't fit its slot, while European cartridges fit. Some games show a region warning on the wrong console, though most games, Sega's especially, are region-free. A region switch added by an owner should be named in the listing.
Video out
Everything comes out of the 9-pin mini-DIN A/V OUT jack on the back, which carries composite video, RGB and stereo sound. The boxed RF Unit plugs into that jack, and Sega sold mono and stereo A/V cables for it, so one RGB cable handles picture and sound together. RetroRGB says every Genesis 2 owner should install a triple bypass board, which bypasses both the audio and video circuits, so look for one in a modded listing. A TV with no composite or RF input needs a converter or upscaler.
Power
The Model 2 takes a smaller 4.75 mm plug wired with the opposite polarity to the Model 1, the same plug as the Genesis 3 and the 32X. Sega's manual says to use only the adapter supplied with the system, since a different one can damage it. Check the plug in the photos before you count on the adapter in the box.
Fakes and mods
Mods are common and usually helpful, especially the triple bypass board RetroRGB recommends for the Model 2's picture and sound, and region switches. The listing should say what was installed.
Should come with it
Sega's Model 2 AC adapter
The RF Unit (MK-1632) or a Sega A/V cable
A Genesis control pad
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
A Model 2 stuck on the Sega license screen is a common question on iFixit's Genesis page, and iFixit's troubleshooting starts with cleaning dust out of the cartridge slot. Its stock picture and sound are the main complaint from enthusiasts, which a bypass board addresses.
01Which model: Check the photos for a compact console with no headphone jack on the front. A much smaller one is likely a Genesis 3, which can't take a Sega CD.
02Power adapter: Look for Sega's Model 2 adapter in the photos. Its plug is smaller than a Model 1 adapter's.
03A/V cable: See whether the RF Unit or an A/V cable is included. A Model 1 cable won't fit the Model 2's 9-pin jack.
04Boot test: Ask for a short video of a game starting. It should pass the Sega license screen and reach the title screen.
05Cartridge slot: Look into the slot in the photos. It should be clean and free of dust or debris.
06Controllers: Count the pads in the photos. A listing with a Sega pad saves you buying one.
07Mods: Read the description for a triple bypass board or region switch. A modded console should say what was installed.
We'd buy the MK-1631 titled tested for an hour with a controller, the AC adapter and an A/V cable at $65 delivered, under the $75 median of the $55 to $110 band. There are at least 118 for sale, bare consoles ask about $38 to $45 delivered, and kits with a pad and cords mostly run $65 to $95. A Model 2 needs its own 4.75 mm adapter, since the Model 1's is a different size and polarity, plus an RF Unit or A/V cable for the 9-pin A/V OUT jack, so check the plug in the photos before you count on it. Ask for a video of a game getting past the Sega license screen, a common hang that often comes down to a dusty cartridge slot. Skip the $205 HDMI bundle from a seller with no feedback shown and the $1,000 boxed unit titled new.
