Rare's GoldenEye 007 reached North America on August 25, 1997, nearly two years after the film, on a 96-megabit cartridge. An inexperienced team led by Martin Hollis spent two and a half years on it, and it proved first-person shooters could work on a home console, with four-player split-screen deathmatch as the hook. It sold more than eight million copies, the third-best-selling N64 game, so loose carts are easy to find. Every cart also holds a ZX Spectrum emulator with ten Rare games, switched off before release and since restored by fan patches. It later joined Nintendo's Player's Choice line, and in January 2023 it came back on Switch and Xbox. Saves go to a chip on the cart, with no battery to die.

The version, the region and what it needs
Which one is it
There's one North American GoldenEye cart. Later boxes are the Player's Choice reissue, marked by a yellow background behind the N64 logo in the top right corner. Don't mix it up with GoldenEye: Rogue Agent or Eurocom's 2010 GoldenEye 007 remake, which are different games on later consoles.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the North American (NTSC) cart for US and Canadian consoles. Japanese consoles share the NTSC lockout but a different notch layout, so it needs a converter there, and a PAL console's lockout chip refuses it.
Saves
Saves go to an EEPROM chip on the cart board, which keeps data without power. There's no save battery, so an old cart doesn't need one replaced.
Should come with it
Complete in box means the cart, the box and the instruction manual
Rumble Pak support, if you want it, is a separate controller accessory
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Carts that won't start are usually dirty on the contacts. On complete copies, the cardboard box and the manual are what wear.
01Label: Zoom in on the cart label in the photos. It should be flat and clean with no peeling or tears.
02Screws: Check the two screws on the back of the cart. Nintendo used 3.8 mm Gamebit security screws, so plain heads mean it's been opened.
03Box version: Look at the N64 logo on the box front in the photos. A yellow background marks the Player's Choice reissue.
04Manual: Ask whether the manual is in the box. A complete copy has the box, the manual and the cart.
05Box condition: Check the box corners and flaps in the photos. They should be square with no tears or crushing.
06Region: Check the title and box for the North American release. A PAL cart won't boot on a US console.
07Running: Ask for a photo of the title screen on a TV. It should load cleanly with no garbled graphics.
08Save: On arrival, finish the first mission and power off. Your progress should be there when you turn it back on.
We'd buy the loose cart titled tested at $34 delivered from a 100% seller, with a clean label in the photo, or a complete-in-box Player's Choice copy from $74 if you want the box and manual. There are at least 147 for sale. Loose carts ask about $30 to $55 delivered, which is what the $35 to $60 band reflects, and complete copies mostly ask $74 to $126. A yellow background behind the N64 logo marks the Player's Choice box, the same game reissued. Zoom in on the label for stains or peeling and check the two screws on the back for Nintendo's security heads; it saves to a chip in the cart, so there's no battery to replace.
