Official Orange Nintendo NES-005 Zapper Light Gun Controller Tested Working
NES Zapper (NES-005)
The Zapper came in the NES's 1985 launch bundle with R.O.B., Duck Hunt and Gyromite, and it's a clever bit of 1980s engineering. Pull the trigger and the game blacks out the screen for one frame, then draws every target as a white box on the next. The photodiode in the barrel looks for that flash. It's tuned to the roughly 15 kHz rhythm of a CRT drawing its lines, which is why it won't work on an LCD or plasma TV. The first Zappers were gray. From 1989 they were orange, after the 1988 Federal Toy Gun Law required toy guns to look different from real ones. If you want to play Duck Hunt, you need a CRT to go with it.

The version, the region and what it needs
- Which one is it
- The first Zappers were gray. Nintendo switched to orange in 1989, after the 1988 Federal Toy Gun Law required toy guns to look distinct from real ones.
- RegionNTSC-U (North America)
- This is the North American NES-005, launched in October 1985. The Famicom's Zapper is the HVC-005, released in Japan in 1984.
- Video out
- The Zapper needs a CRT TV. It reads the light from the screen as it's being drawn, and flat panels have display lag and give off light its filter can't see well, so it won't work on LCD, plasma or other flat-panel TVs.
Should come with it
- Duck Hunt, or the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt Game Pak from the Action Set
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Nintendo's service workbook lists loose or damaged trigger springs, a worn trigger switch, a bad cable and a faulty board. It also says a bright room or TV brightness set too high can stop it reading.
- 01Your TV: Make sure you have a CRT TV before you buy. On a flat panel it won't hit anything.
- 02Color: Check the color in the photos against the listing. Gray means 1985 to 1989 and orange means 1989 or later.
- 03Trigger: Ask the seller to pull the trigger a few times on video. It should move smoothly and consistently every time.
- 04CRT test: Ask whether it was tested with Duck Hunt on a CRT. Ducks falling when you hit them is what you want.
- 05Cable: Look along the cord and plug in the photos. No cuts, kinks or cracked plug housing is what you want.
- 06Shell: Check the barrel and grip in the photos for cracks. A whole shell with no missing pieces is what you want.
- 07Port: On arrival, plug it into controller port 2. Most Zapper games only read it there.
New to retro hardware? How to check a used retro console covers testing, yellowed plastic and opened shells, and regions and video out explains what will run on what, and on which TV.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026We'd buy the gray NES-005 titled tested at $21 delivered, an original from before Nintendo switched to orange in 1989, or the orange one titled tested at $20 with free shipping. There are at least 146 for sale, loose guns mostly ask $15 to $30 delivered, and a boxed one with its manual and styrofoam is up for auction at $66 with no bids. The Zapper only works on a CRT TV, since it reads the light as the screen is drawn, so it's no use on a flat panel. Trigger springs and switches wear, so ask whether it was tested on a CRT with Duck Hunt, and try it in a dim room with the TV brightness down. Skip the untested ones when a tested gun costs a few dollars more, and the one with no seller shown.
