Phantasy Star IV closed the original Phantasy Star series. Sega released it in Japan in December 1993 as Phantasy Star: The End of the Millennium, and it reached North America in February 1995, late in the Genesis's life. Rieko Kodama directed it, and it tells its story through manga-style comic panels, new to the series, along with combination techniques in its turn-based battles. Boris Vallejo painted the North American box. At 24 megabits, Sega's own player's guide called it the largest battery-backed Genesis cart available. It's an RPG built around saved progress, so the save battery matters as much as the label.

Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
The save battery is the weak point, since a dead one means the game can't keep your progress. Label wear and a missing manual are what usually separate one copy from another.
New to retro hardware? How to check a used retro console covers testing, yellowed plastic and opened shells, and regions and video out explains what will run on what, and on which TV.
Buying guide
We'd buy the complete copy titled tested with its box and manual at $229 delivered, $13 under the $242 median of the $100 to $300 band, which mostly reflects complete copies. There are at least 22 for sale; loose carts here ask $81 to $89 delivered and complete ones $229 to $256, plus a $480 copy that adds the original receipt. It saves to a battery on the cart, and the cheapest loose cart is titled with a drained one, so ask any seller for a photo of a saved game still loading after the cart has been off. Reproduction carts of this game are sold, so compare the label, shell and board with other listings and be wary of a copy priced well under $80. The Nice Condition title on the 97.8% seller's copy is shared by three accounts, so compare their photos before buying.
$80.90est. delivered
The lowest delivered real copy at $81, a loose cart titled tested, but the title says the battery is drained, so it won't keep your saves. Budget for a battery swap, or pay a little more for a cart whose save still holds.
