Warren Robinett turned the text game Colossal Cave Adventure into pictures and fit it into 4K of ROM with 15 bytes to spare. Atari released it in March 1980, and it sold more than a million copies. Atari didn't credit its programmers then, to keep rivals from finding and hiring them, so Robinett hid a room that reads "Created by Warren Robinett" and left the company before anyone found it. A fifteen-year-old in Salt Lake City did, and Atari's software director Steve Wright argued to keep it in, likening it to an Easter egg for players to find. You hunt an enchanted chalice past three dragons named Yorgle, Grundle and Rhindle, plus a bat. AtariAge rates the cart Common+, so a clean original isn't hard to find.

The version, the region and what it needs
Which one is it
The first release has Atari's text label, with the title in plain type. AtariAge also lists two picture labels, one dated 1987 and one undated, all under Atari's number CX2613.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
This is the North American NTSC cart. The 2600 has no lockout, so it fits any 2600, but AtariAge says mixing NTSC and PAL makes the screen roll with strange colors.
Saves
Nothing to save. It's a 4K ROM with no battery, and every game starts fresh.
Fakes and mods
Adventure is on the 10-in-1 cartridge that came with the 2023 Atari 2600+, and on Atari's Flashback consoles, so make sure a listing is the single original cart. New reproduction carts with fresh artwork are sold for many 2600 games, so a label that looks freshly printed on a loose cart deserves a question.
Should come with it
The manual
The box (complete in box means cart, box and manual)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The cart is a single 4K ROM with no battery, so condition comes down to the label and the contacts. On a boxed copy, check the box and manual as closely as the cart.
01Label: Check which label it has in the photos. The text label is the original release, and the picture labels came later.
02Part number: Look for CX2613 on the label or box in the photos. That's Atari's number for Adventure.
03Single cart: Make sure the photos show the Adventure cart on its own. A 10-in-1 cart from the Atari 2600+ is a different item.
04Label wear: Zoom in on the label in the photos. It should be readable, without big tears or peeling.
05Contacts: Ask for a photo of the cart's contacts. They should be clean, with no green corrosion.
06Complete: For a boxed copy, check the photos for the box, manual and cart. Complete in box means all three.
07Region: Ask the seller whether it's the North American NTSC cart. A PAL cart rolls on a US console and TV.
08Play test: On arrival, play a game and walk through several screens. The picture should hold steady with no rolling or garbled graphics.
We'd buy the text-label cart titled tested at $16 delivered, the original first-release label, under the $24 median of the $15 to $40 band. That band is almost all loose carts, while complete-in-box copies titled tested ask from $70 delivered and one with the box and cart but no manual asks $41. The text label came first and two picture labels followed, all numbered CX2613, and Adventure is also on the 2600+ 10-in-1 cart and Atari's Flashback consoles, so make sure a listing is the single original cart. Reproduction carts exist for many 2600 games, so ask about a loose cart whose label looks freshly printed. Skip the CIB copy at $128, about $58 more than the one titled tested at $70.
