Paddles came in the box with early VCS bundles, and the 2600's ball-and-bat games need them. Each paddle is a knob on a potentiometer that turns just short of a full circle, and two paddles share one 9-pin plug, so two pairs give you four players at once. AtariAge lists dozens of games that use them, from Breakout and Super Breakout to Warlords, Video Olympics and Circus Atari, and they work on Atari's 8-bit computers too. Age is the catch. A potentiometer stops reading accurately when its contacts get dirty or worn, which shows up as a paddle that jitters or jumps on screen. AtariAge's own fix is to open the paddle and spray cleaner into the pot, so a jittery pair is often a cleaning job.
CX30 paddle pair (original Atari)Paddles with cleaned or replaced pots
Real 2600 paddles come as a pair joined to one 9-pin plug. The driving controller that came with Indy 500 looks similar, but it plugs in one to a port and spins all the way around, while a paddle stops just short of a full turn.
RegionNTSC-U (North America)
Paddles have no region. A CX30 pair works on any 2600, and on Atari's 8-bit computers.
Should come with it
Both paddles, still joined to the one plug
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Dirty or worn potentiometer contacts make a paddle read inaccurately, so it jitters or jumps on screen. AtariAge's FAQ fix is a spray of cleaner/degreaser into the pot, and turning a paddle too far can break it.
01Both paddles: Check the photos for two paddles on one plug. That's how they came, and paddle games expect the pair.
02Knobs: Look at both knobs in the photos. They should be present and sit straight on their shafts.
03Cables: Follow both cables to where they join and on to the plug in the photos. You want no cuts or bare wire.
04Not driving: Check the title and photos for paddles, not the Indy 500 driving controller. Paddles come as a joined pair.
05Jitter: Ask the seller whether either paddle jitters in Breakout or a similar game. A smooth, steady paddle on screen is what you want.
06Pots: Ask whether the pots have been cleaned or replaced. Either one is a good sign on paddles this old.
07Sweep: On arrival, turn each knob slowly from end to end in a paddle game. The paddle should glide across the screen with no jumps.
08Hard stop: On arrival, feel for the stop at each end of the turn. It should stop firmly just short of a full rotation.
We'd buy the CX30 pair titled tested and working at $17 delivered, under the $20 to $35 band, or pay $28 for a pair titled jitter free and cleaned if you'd rather not deal with the pots. There are at least 46 for sale, loose pairs mostly ask $20 to $35 delivered, and a boxed pair titled tested asks $30. Jitter on screen comes from dirty or worn pots, so ask for a short video of a paddle game with each paddle turned slowly from end to end, and check the photos for both paddles joined to one 9-pin plug. New-looking pairs titled with a 4ft black cable may be reproductions, so look for the Atari logo before buying one. Skip the restored pair from a 96.7% seller whose title another account also uses.
